When it comes to men's grooming, the trick isn't to spend a fortune on a thousand different products, or to lock yourself in the bathroom for hours at a time. Rather, you should develop a daily routine that is quick, simple and about maintenance, ensuring you don't let yourself down with unsightly hair or unnecessarily puffy eyes.
We at CIRCA75 (Grooming Experts since 2005) have compiled a list of grooming habits all men should abide by.
1 | Become a regular at your barbers
A big tip: once you've finished your current appointment, book your next for approximately 4 weeks time. Too many men wait for the overgrown stage before rebooking with their barber. If you've noticed your hair needs a cut, then other people have noticed too! The trick is to be proactive, not reactive and have a regular place you trust and feel comfortable at.
I recently changed barbers, as my local place decided it appropriate to play death metal while brandishing a cut-throat and scissors. WTF? Needless to say, I won't be returning anytime soon.
2 | Know which hair products work for you
Hair products for men have got a bit more confusing since the Brylcreem our Grandfather's swore by, so make sure you're informed on what each product is for. Thicker hair and messy styles can handle waxes and pomades, but if your hair's thinner, then lighter products and sprays will give your hair some staying power. If you're slightly confused, ask your barber, as the right products can make all the difference.
3 | Find your signature fragrance
Your cologne isn't supposed to be loud or obvious, it should become a subtle part of your overall presence. Rather than owning a plethora of fragrances, choose one or two classic scents you really like and invest in them. Typically woody, spicy or herby scents suit the winter months, while lighter, citrusy scents work best in spring and summer.
4 | Invest in an electric toothbrush
Electric toothbrushes are designed to do most of the work for you. Rotating brushes reduce 11% more plaque than manual toothbrushes, and can also significantly reduce gum problems. And while you're at it, use a mouthwash after you brush first thing in the morning.
I personally love our Marvis Strong Mint Mouthwash available online at CIRCA75. Made in Italy, our Marvis mouthwash cleanses and invigorates the entire mouth using natural ingredients. The refreshing formula is incredibly long lasting, leaving your mouth energized with an intense minty cool all day.
And while you're there, check our our Marvis toothpaste selection. This is one product that takes pride of place at Casa CIRCA75.
5 | Learn how to manscape properly
Trimming your pubic area is not only perfectly acceptable in 2019, it's polite. A top tip here, is aim for what you'd appreciate in a partner, i.e. keep things neat and tidy. Remeber to keep whatever device you use for this sensitive task separate from what you shave your face with. There are plenty of products on the market designed for the nether region's unique challenges without having to fill your razor with short and curlies.
6 | Scrub your face
Use a microbead-free scrub on a Monday morning to scrub the weekend off your face, and every other day of the week go for a plain face wash that's less abrasive. You'll be looking better than you feel in no time.
I choose the Proraso Face Exfoliating Scrub. This dermatologically-tested scrub uses natural almond and hazel shell powders to gently lift away dead cells and other impurities. With its unique blend of essential oils and shea butter, it is suitable for use with beards, stubble and clean-shaven cheeks and will not strip away the natural oils that keep beards looking healthy and soft.
7 | Manage your facial hair
Unless you're planning to move out into the wilderness to find yourself, facial hair of any length needs to be tamed and maintained if you want to be taken seriously. You don't have to spend much on a beard trimmer , so pick one up and get into a weekly habit of tidying up.
8 | Learn how to shave like an expert
You might not have time in the morning for an extensive wet-shaving routine, but learning the basics of a good shave is important. Preparing your skin beforehand with a shave oil will help the razor glide over your hairs, while soaking the blades in warm water will help your pores expand, allowing the hair to come off your face with less redness and irritation.
Personally, I use Captain Fawcett Barberism™ Pre-Shave Oil from CIRCA75.
Captain Fawcett’s Barberism™ collaboration with Sid Sottung, has produced a most outstanding Pre-Shave Oil. Six oils with moisturising, glide & nourishing properties have been expertly blended with Sid’s timeless & yet refreshingly elegant scent that boasts top notes of Lime & Orange, mid notes of Rose & Galbanum along with the earthier base notes of Cedarwood, Patchouli & Musk.
To Use: First wash your face in warm water to soften beard stubble, before massaging a few drops of oil into the area to be shaved. The further application of a hot face cloth for 30 seconds or so will accelerate the process whilst adding a relaxing luxury to your shave. Brush on shaving soap lather & then shave as normal.
Handmade in small batches by the Captain’s master blender, supplied in a glass bottle with a pump to facilitate accurate dispensing.
9 | Put your best feet forward
They might not be on show that often, but a good footcare routine is still important. Take care of them after a bath or shower (when the skin is softest) using a pummice stone on any dead skin, before lathering a generous amount of moisturiser on. Then when summer rolls back around, you can wear your Havaianas and cause an absolute minimal of disgust in others.
10 | Tackle dark circles
Look, we all made our peace with moisturising years ago. But the stuff you use on your face is still too much for those patches under your eyes, where dark circles and puffiness reveal your heavy weekend and make you look under-slept and older than you are. Incorporate an eye cream or roll-on into your morning routine to help counter the problem.
11 | Sort those eyebrows
Big eyebrows aren't a problem, but if they're meeting in the middle, you've got a problem on your face. Pay attention to the spot in the middle, and any errant hairs above and below your brows are also worth staying on top of. Plucking is time-consuming, so if need be, ask your barber to tidy your brows up when you're next in. Believe me, he's heard it before.
12 | Nail your hand-care routine
Cutting your nails once a week, preferably after a shower, to soften them and make them easier to trim. That rough, flaky skin around the nail bed should be treated with a tiny bit of moisturiser every couple of days to smooth things over.
13 | Moisturise obsessively
I recommend this SKNHEAD Game Changer Moisturiser and Hairstyler.
SKNHEAD Game Changer is unique. It's an effective skin moisturiser that also helps control and style your hair. Ingredients such as Cacao Seed Butter and Palm Oil, which is rich in Vitamin E, are known for their anti-oxidant and anti-ageing properties when used on skin, but also will help to lightly moisturise hair and give it a healthy-looking sheen, whilst helping to hold and define your style.
On cleansed skin, gently massage over the face, beard and tattoos to moisturise, avoiding the eyes. Then take some more and work it through dry or damp hair to control and condition.

14 | Wash your face before bed
If you want to head to bed with a clean slate then you're going to need a solid face wash routine.
Start the process with ice cold water, before moving onto a light, alcohol-free face wash and remember, avoid moisturising to give your pores a chance to breath a bit.
I've taken to Proraso's Beard Wash, a gentle, yet effective cleanser for both beard and skin that won't strip away natural oils. This low-foaming formula works to soften and smooth the beard while removing dirt, debris and bad odours, while also helping to prevent beard itch and beard dandruff.
Dispensed from a handy pump bottle, this beard wash leaves a woody scent with notes of rose, cumin, and vanilla.
15 | Wear sunscreen
It might seem counterproductive and, frankly, a bit pointless to apply anything featuring the word 'sun' on to your skin in the depths of winter, but your face will thank you for it. Even at this time of year UV rays escape through the walls of fog, rain and darkness, drying out and damaging that precious skin of yours.
We suggest adding a light SPF 15 moisturiser into your daily grooming routine, a two birds one stone job that will nourish and protect, which is always nice.
Follow my guide, and you'll look and feel better in no time.
